Plumbing Q&A: Clogged Toilet
Plumbing Q&A: Clogged Toilet
Q: My toilet is clogged and won’t flush. What should I do?
A: If your toilet is clogged and won’t flush, there are a few things you can try before calling a plumber. You can use a plunger, which creates suction to help loosen the clog. Or, if you have a toilet auger (also known as a plumbing snake), you can try using it to break up the clog or to loosen and pull it out. If neither of these methods works, or you are unable to locate the source of the clog, it’s best to call a plumber to assess the issue and determine the best course of action.
An important tip for preventing toilet and plumbing problems in the future is to be mindful of what goes down the drains and toilets. Avoid flushing items that don’t break down, such as wipes, feminine hygiene products, diapers or paper towels. Keep an eye on children so they don’t inadvertently try to flush a toy or object down the toilet. Even the type of toilet paper can make a difference. Bob recommends using 1-ply toilet paper (such as Scott brand 1-ply), rather than 2-ply or 3-ply paper.
These are just some examples that he’s come across as the cause of clogged toilets. In our 40-plus years of experience as a plumber in the Woodbridge NJ area, he’s just about seen it all when it comes to plumbing problems.
